Our speaker will be Dr. Peter Mancall who will speak on  "A New World: England's First View of America". He gave the keynote address when it opened at the Yale Center for British Art. The exhibit will travel to the Jamestowne Settlement, Virginia for viewing July 15-October 15, 2008. This exhibit will be at Yale until June 1, 2008.

Dr. Peter Mancall is a professor of history at the University of Southern California whose work has focused on early America, Native Americans, and the early modern Atlantic world.

His new book, "Our English View of the New World through the eyes of John White”.
John White made five voyages to Virginia from England from 1585-1593.
He was Governor of the "Lost Colony at Roanoke Island" and grandfather of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World. He left the colony (on what is now the coast of North Carolina) and returned to England for supplies. Unfortunately, his ship, and every other ship in the nation, was detained for the great battle against the Spanish Armada. When he finally returned nearly three years later, there was no trace of the settlers. White's watercolors of the Algonquians and the flora and fauna here are very lovely. They were published and disseminated throughout Europe and became the stereotypic image of North American natives for several generations.
Dr. Mancall will do a PowerPoint projection of the paintings as a part of his talk.

Dr. Peter Mancall's newest book is the one we are pre-selling:
"Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America".
This is "a well-written, meticulously-researched account of the life of the man who rates as the single most important figure in creating the "spirit of colonization" in England during the latter years of Elizabeth I's Reign"

His books will be available for pre purchase only. None will be sold at this meeting. If you would like a copy of this book please write a check made out to “First California Company” for $38 and send it in ASAP. Pre-Paid Deadline for ordering his book is May 18, 2008. Dr. Mancall will sign at the meeting.
Send your check to Virginia Gotleib, 3401 Loadstone Dr., Sherman Oaks, California 91403-4513
